Shamanism is a complex system of beliefs, myths and rituals that overlays individual tribal religions.

The shaman is an intermediary between the human world and the spiritual world. In a consciously induced ecstatic state, the shaman leaves his body and, in a trance, travels to the underworld, to the heavens or to the depths of the sea.

His social functions make the shaman an important and powerful member of society. He sees into the future, appeases the spirits with sacrificial rituals, purifies and heals the sick and accompanies the deceased into the realm of the dead.
